- The Water and Wastewater
Commissioner's granted approval Wednesday night
for Formula One developers to construct water
and wastewater transmission lines for the future
race track in Elroy.
The meeting was a public hearing and several
people once again spoke out against the track.
Some voiced their concerns with a lack of
transparency. Others were concerned about the
environmental impact.
A question was also raised about the increase in
the cost of putting those transmission lines on
the site. The original zoning for the tract of
land in Elroy was for a residential subdivision.
The nearly three million dollar additional cost
discussed Wednesday night was the result of
having to extend the wastewater transmission
line plans for the extra land space and re-route
the original plans for the water lines due to
the change in the race track location.
The cost of putting in both of those lines is
just over $13 million.
With approval Wednesday night, the track is one
step closer to the start of construction.
"The city and the county have been very helpful
in keeping this project on track," said Formula
One Attorney, Richard Suttle. "It's critical we
stay on schedule to meet the goals and deadlines
of the 2012 race."
The Zoning and Platting Committee next Tuesday
will be the next step in moving the track
forward.
Council approval is expected the beginning of
December.
Construction is still slated to begin the end of
December with a completion date the middle of
2012.
- Races could begin by June of 2012.
